13th Floor Haunted House: Denver

13th Floor Haunted House

Ok, yes its not the typical "Colorado Explored" post but not everything is outside, and besides, it is still in Colorado....so it counts.
Got a call from Dee on Friday, he scored some extra tickets and invited me along to check it out, so that was a no brainer. We had fast passes to skip the line but when we got there (Nov 1st) there was no need for them. I suppose since the actual HALLOWEEN holiday had passed not many people were out to see the attractions, well, that's fine. NO LINES FOR US! When you first get there you go through a standard security line, there is nothing posted about what can and cannot be taken into the venue so when we were told we had to go back to the truck and drop off Dee's JUUL it was a bit frustrating having had just waited in that line. Post a sign, save people some time ya *#$. Really though as far as complaints go, that's all I got. We had a blast, I'm going to have to say it was the best "Haunted House" experience I've had to date. It really was that fun. After security we made our way over to the outside bartender and snagged a cocktail before we went in. We figured we would have time to drink it in the line....but there was no line. So that meant, bottoms up! We drank our drinks and made our way to the front of the line and pretty much went right in. No line also meant we were in the front of the group and anyone whose ever been to a Haunted House before knows, if your not in the front, its not going to be fun because you see all the scary stuff before it can scare you. Dee and I took our time while in the house and really soaked it in. The details on some of the set pieces and animatronics were pretty impressive.
They "borrowed" a lot of their ideas from pop culture and Hollywood only changing them enough to avoid a lawsuit I'm sure. You had "The Clown" ("IT") who feasted on fears every 13 years, I believe Pennywise was every 27 years? "The Other Side" subbing in for Netflix's Strangers Things "Upside Down"(Complete with the same font and character likenesses) and a few others. So even though they might have been "knock offs" they borrowed heavily enough, and were done well enough to provide all the familiarity without the licensing money and that really added to the fun. For an additional ticket you can also head over and check out SENSORY OVERLOAD, a maze you have to complete that features changing terrain in complete darkness. Let me tell you, this part was really cool and worth the cost of the extra ticket. (I mean this figuratively, I believe it would have been worth the ticket price but we got in for free, so I wouldn't really know) We ended up being able to check out the main attraction again and sensory overload free of charge but for as to how we pulled that off, its a trade secret. Sorry Kids. I cant say I was terrified through the whole thing or anything like that but there were enough jump scares to keep me cautious and that, combined with the set pieces and thought that went into it all was more than enough to keep me engaged in the moment.  I walked away very happy from our experience there and can honestly recommend it to anyone who wants a good time out around Halloween.
